When installing network equipment in environments where dust, dirt or moisture could be a problem, an Ingress Protection (IP) rating can be an important consideration when selecting a data cabinet.
The IP rating is an internationally recognised system that defines how well an enclosure protects its contents against solid particles and water ingress. The standard IEC 60529 defines it.
An IP rating consists of two digits. The first digit indicates protection against solid objects and dust, while the second digit indicates protection against water.
What do the IP numbers mean?
For example, an IP55 cabinet is dust-protected and protected against water jets. An IP66 cabinet is dust-tight and protected against powerful water jets.
For IT equipment installed in workshops, warehouses, manufacturing areas, outdoor locations or other tough environments, an IP-rated cabinet provides valuable protection for switches, patch panels and other network equipment.
Consider where the cabinet will be installed and choose an IP rating that suits the conditions it will face. Remember that doors, cable entry points and other openings also need to provide the same level of protection.
